Proverbs 8-New International Version (NIV)
8 Does not wisdom call out?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
2 At the highest point along the way,
where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
3 beside the gate leading into the city,
at the entrance, she cries aloud:
4 “To you, O people, I call out;
I raise my voice to all mankind.
10 Choose my instruction instead of silver,
knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 for wisdom is more precious than rubies,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.
17 I love those who love me,
and those who seek me find me.
18 With me are riches and honor,
enduring wealth and prosperity.
19 My fruit is better than fine gold;
what I yield surpasses choice silver.
20 I walk in the way of righteousness,
along the paths of justice,
21 bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me
and making their treasuries full.
32 “Now then, my children, listen to me;
blessed are those who keep my ways.
33 Listen to my instruction and be wise;
do not disregard it.
34 Blessed are those who listen to me,
watching daily at my doors,
waiting at my doorway.
35 For those who find me find life
and receive favor from the Lord.
You surround me with Your lovingkindness. In Your presence is fullness of joy.
Make me a conduit of Your shalom. Use me to connect people’s needs to Your abundance.
Peace. Come drink freely of the water of life, then go give it away.
Increase my joy. Increase my wisdom. Lady Wisdom is my delight.
Then listen to her counsel. All of life is sacred. All of life is holy. To walk in wisdom is to walk in love. To walk in purity. To walk in humility, service and joy.
Recall My counsel in Proverbs 2 and again in Proverbs 8 this morning. Those who pursue Lady Wisdom with persistence, diligence and passion will be rewarded with the best in life.
Recall your pursuit of Sheryl as a teenager. You were intentional, diligent and persistent! And you were rewarded with the faithful love of a lifelong companion.
In the same way, as you delight in the wisdom of the scriptures about love, faith, delayed gratification, self-control, servanthood, so your life can be sweeter and sweeter and you’ll bear more fruit for others to pick.
Be careful about your personification of wisdom. She’s not another member of the godhead. She’s an aspect of My personality. I am the source of all wisdom. The one who walks in wisdom, which is to walk in the holy fear of the Lord, will “do life” well. His leaf won’t wither, and what he does will prosper.
Of course it’s a lifelong quest. It’s analogous to the pursuit of good health. You don’t wake up some morning and say, “OK, I’ve eaten enough veggies and done enough cardio. Now I’m healthy; I’m done.” No, you keep at it. The truly wise person is never really satisfied with where he is. No, he’s committed to an ongoing search.
