It is our 46th anniversary! The time has flown, yet it seems Noval and I have known each other forever. We certainly have known each other for most of our lives, having met and begun dating at 15. We thought when we married after dating for almost 6 years that we knew each other well and surely would be able to avoid many pitfalls. But we still had issues with communication, hiding our real thoughts and feelings at times and not knowing how to deal properly with anger. We had a lot of work to do but we both recognized Jesus as Savior and soon came to depend on Him to show us the way to live and truly love one another.
Through God’s grace we weathered losing a baby, working on sinful habit patterns, and three years of my clinical depression during menopause. We learned to not idolize each other but to put God first and each other second. We learned to communicate on deeper levels, attack problems not each other and to stick to a budget based on God’s financial principles. We have loved one another through times we didn’t like each other, in shortfalls and plenty, prayed with and for one another and supported each others’ interests and ministries. We agreed from the beginning not to entertain separation but to work out our issues with God’s and others’ help. We read books on marriage together, went to marriage seminars and submitted ourselves to counseling and pastors’ and elders’ authority under God.
Today we are trophies of God’s grace. We are certainly older and I hope wiser. We have slowed down some and accommodate each others’ aches or pains while seeking God for healing.
Through it all I can say it has been very much worth it. Noval is God’s gift to me. He is a major blessing in my life. He is handsome, gentle, helpful, and wise in many things. We have fun and make each other laugh, often several times a day. We are blessed with two wonderful kids and their families pluss a host of other great family and friends. Most of all we are blessed with a great God who has not treated us as our sins deserved but forgiven and saved us, and walks and talks with us, teaches us, and daily fills our lives with sweetness.
Thank You, God! And thank you, Noval! I love you. (And just so you know, I’m picking up your option for another 46 years. 😉 )
